Wildcat Highlights: The Top Ten of 2024-25
#5 – Discovery Day: Three Powerful Voices, One Unforgettable Message
At #5 in our Wildcat Highlights countdown is a day that left an undeniable mark on the hearts and minds of our students—Discovery Day at St. Joseph Academy, featuring three dynamic and deeply inspiring speakers: Chris Herren, Dr. Reggie Wright, and Marc Mero.
Each speaker came from a different walk of life. Each had lived through highs, lows, setbacks, and personal breakthroughs. And together, they brought a message of honesty, resilience, and hope that reminded every student in the room: your story matters, and your future is still yours to write.
Chris Herren
A former NBA player and standout at Boston College and Fresno State, Chris Herren was once known for his talent on the court. But behind the success was a hidden battle with addiction that nearly cost him everything—his career, his family, and his life.
Chris spoke openly and vulnerably about the pressures he faced as a young athlete, how substance use slowly took control, and what it took to find recovery and start over. His message wasn’t just about addiction—it was about awareness, self-worth, and the courage to ask for help before it’s too late. He challenged students to think critically about their choices and to look out for the people around them.
Dr. Reggie Wright
An author, college professor, and motivational speaker, Dr. Reggie Wright brought unmatched energy and wisdom to the stage. Born and raised in a challenging environment, he used his life story to show students what it means to rise above your circumstances.
With a mix of humor, real talk, and relatable stories, Dr. Wright spoke about the power of decision-making, the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people, and the truth that your past doesn’t define your future unless you let it. His message centered on resilience, focus, and purpose—and he reminded students that greatness often comes from struggle.
Marc Mero
A former WWE Intercontinental Champion turned national youth speaker, Marc Mero closed the day with a powerful, emotional talk on choices, loss, and the value of relationships. Sharing the tragic losses of his mother, brother, and closest friends, Marc spoke with a vulnerability that instantly connected with the audience.
He challenged students to reflect on how they treat the people in their lives—to say “I love you” more often, to value time with family, and to never take a day for granted. His message was deeply personal, but universal: the way you live today can either build or break the relationships that matter most.
Together, these three speakers brought different stories, different styles, and different lessons—but their impact was unified and undeniable. Our students listened, reflected, and left the auditorium changed.
Mr. Stephen Cappuccio, Head of School, shared:
“Discovery Day isn’t just a day off from the classroom—it’s a day that gives our students perspective, purpose, and the chance to hear real stories from people who have lived through challenges and come out stronger. This is what education looks like when it reaches the heart.”
At St. Joseph Academy, we believe education should shape not only minds—but character. Discovery Day is one of the many ways we do that, and this year’s speakers made it one we’ll never forget.
Join us next week as we break into the Top Four of our countdown—with a moment that brought the entire SJA community together in celebration.
