Wildcat Highlights: The Top Ten Moments of 2024-25

#7 – Service in Action: Junior Class Volunteers at the Special Olympics Polar Plunge

At #7 in our Wildcat Highlights: The Top Ten of 2024-25 countdown is a moment that brought service, school pride, and a little bit of freezing fun together for an unforgettable experience—our junior class trip to volunteer at the Special Olympics Polar Plunge at Citizens Bank Park!

Organized through our Servant Leadership Institute, the December event gave our juniors a chance to step into meaningful roles as volunteers at one of the region’s most inspiring gatherings. With hundreds of athletes, families, and supporters participating, our students helped with check-in, distributed merchandise, guided participants, and cheered on the brave plungers who took the icy leap for a great cause.

But the highlight of the day? Watching our very own Head of School, Mr. Stephen Cappuccio, step up to the plate—literally—and take the plunge himself, proudly representing SJA and the spirit of servant leadership that drives our school community.

This trip wasn’t just about community service hours—it was about our students witnessing the power of inclusion, joy, and courage firsthand. For many, it was their first experience with Special Olympics, and one that left a lasting impression.

Mrs. Jennifer LaRosa, Director of Servant Leadership, shared:

“The Polar Plunge is one of those events where the meaning of servant leadership becomes real. Our students didn’t just show up—they engaged, encouraged, and lifted others up. Seeing them connect with the athletes and cheer them on with genuine joy was a powerful reminder of what this program is all about.”

This day captured the heart of what we strive to build through our Servant Leadership Institute—opportunities that stretch beyond the classroom, where students develop empathy, character, and a deep commitment to others.

With laughs, learning, and one unforgettable plunge, the Polar Plunge experience will remain one of the most meaningful memories of the year for our juniors—and for all of us at St. Joseph Academy.
