Learning Beyond the Classroom: SJA’s Advanced Semester & Discovery Program in Action

At St. Joseph Academy, education is more than textbooks and test scores—it's about preparing students for life through meaningful, hands-on learning. This spring, our Advanced Semester once again demonstrated the power of experiential education, echoing the same philosophy that drives our yearlong Discovery Program.

Both programs reflect our mission to engage students in learning beyond the classroom—immersing them in real-world experiences that cultivate leadership, curiosity, collaboration, and self-confidence.

Advanced Semester: A Week of Immersive Learning

Just concluded last week, Advanced Semester offered students a weeklong opportunity to dive into elective courses rooted in exploration, creativity, and personal growth. Course offerings included:

  • Designing the Digital Future – An entrepreneurship course focused on branding, marketing, and website design.

  • Big Apple Trip – An immersive exploration of New York City’s culture, industries, and historic landmarks.

  • Into the Wilderness – A camping experience focused on self-reliance, nature appreciation, and team-building.

  • Saddle-Up – A hands-on horsemanship course at Ashley’s Farm that taught care, patience, and discipline.

  • Cooking with Papa Joe – A culinary journey that celebrated family, food, and life skills through the art of cooking.

“Advanced Semester is a reminder that the most meaningful lessons often happen when we step outside our comfort zones,” said Mr. Stephen Cappuccio, Head of School. “We’re proud to offer programs that prepare students not just for tests, but for life.”

The Discovery Program: Monthly Journeys of Growth

Throughout the academic year, SJA’s Discovery Program has provided monthly experiential learning days. From community service projects and guest speakers to field trips and student-led workshops, Discovery Days mirror the Advanced Semester’s goals in a broader, continuous format.

“Both Advanced Semester and the Discovery Program allow students to take ownership of their learning,” said Ms. Tamika Solomon, Dean of Student Life. “Whether it’s a day trip or a weeklong course, students are gaining skills and insights that traditional curriculum doesn’t always offer.”

Together, these programs represent our commitment to a well-rounded education—one where students not only absorb knowledge but also apply it in meaningful ways.

We’re proud of our students for leaning into these opportunities, and we look forward to continuing to build programs that challenge and inspire them to lead with faith, family, and purpose.
